The Healing Place of Athens is a multipurpose facility in Athens-Clarke County. Men seeking help not only for substance abuse recovery but also for the gamut of problems related to homelessness have only THPA to assist them. Our program is designed to address all stages of the recovery process, beginning with the Road to Recovery course, through gainful employment, to ultimately leading an independent and productive life of sobriety. Unique to THPA is that we are able to attract homeless men to our recovery program through our overnight shelter, which exposes them to our staff and clients who can offer them hope, encouragement, and support for pursuing their own recovery.

Facts and Figures

• Approximately 60% of the homeless population is single men, most of whom are suffering from drug addiction.
• The men in our recovery program have been addicted to drugs and/or alcohol for 10 years or more.

Homeless Shelter

Homeless men seeking emergency overnight shelter are provided with a place to sleep, a shower, and a hot meal. Those needing special attention are taken to area detoxification centers or to the Athens Regional Health Center. Our overnight clients are invited, never forced, to enter our recovery program.

Recovery Program

Phase I is a self-paced group program structured around the Christian-based Celebrate Recovery Program coupled with the counseling method of The Journey of Recovery and Life’s Healing Choices. During Phase I, clients participate in daily recovery workshops, which include written assignments and exams. Each client is a member of our family who shares in household chores, group leader responsibilities, and working in the overnight shelter. Program clients receive spiritual, individual, or family counseling. We offer two in-house Alcoholic Anonymous meetings and two in-house Narcotics Anonymous meeting weekly. Program clients are also assisted in finding an Accountability Partner who can mentor them through their recovery.

Transition

Phase II clients continue to participate in meetings, chores, shelter duty, and counseling. Remaining at THPA is critical to our clients’ ability to overcome situations that “trigger” relapses, such as receiving their first paycheck, and remaining focused on their recovery. We assist our clients in attending outside recovery meetings, finding jobs, receiving job skill training, and completing their education through a variety of resources available to us.

We maintain a continuum of care for our clients by helping them find a place to live and continuing to offer them individual and family crisis counseling.
